~ early education care ~ where our play supports our learning

Letter “Zz”

Our next letter is “Zz”. Children usually go to “zebra” when you ask them what starts with “Zz”. Zebras are a natural draw with their clear black and white coloring and being similar to familiar horses. To broaden the learning we are going to go the zoo and fun facts for many of the different animals we would find there.

These books will be read at our shared reading time and available for children to view as they wish:

  • Life-Size Zoo by Teruyuki Komiya
  • Why Do Camels Have Long Eyelashes? by Jennifer Shand
  • 1,2,3 To the Zoo by Eric Carle
  • Zoo Day: A My First Experience Book by Anne Rockwell
  • The View at the Zoo by Kathleen Long Bostrom
  • Never, EVER Shout in a Zoo by Karma Wilson
  • The Zebra Who Was Sad by Rachel Elliot

I’ll be pulling activities from my Pinterest Board: Our Personal ABC Book. There will be separate sections for each letter. Here’s “Zz” for Zebra (and zoo).

New activities will be added to a couple of the favorites from last week in our activity drawers and available as choice.

The book page will be separate, but can be made over the week period. The basis for our “Zz for Zebra” book page comes from an idea found on Play Create Explore. We will give shaving cream a try as our art medium, but will build our zebra to show the letter form. (*See end of post for update on finished book page.)

*Update:

The free memory game from kidszactivities was a hit and each child got a copy to take home.

We adapted Playdough to Plato’s free race to the top zoo animal game. I cut up the dice pattern and placed the pictures into our favorite dice pockets. Now we could use individually with the laminated game mat or using different colored markers we could play together. So many adaptive ways to use depending on the children present.

Exploring shaving cream and paint was a good sensory experience with finished papers we cut up to build our zebras for our ABC book “Zz” page:
